A family returning from voting in their hometowns in Penang and Kedah were tragically killed in a car crash with another vehicle at KM452 North-South Expressway yesterday morning, 22 November

The deceased were identified to be Mat Zaki Mahmud, aged 48, and his daughter Mya Zaratul Nuraishah Mat Zaki, who was only 13.

Mat Zaki's cousin, Farizal Othman, aged 37, said the family was on their way to Pahang after fulfilling their civic duties in Penang and Kedah and travelling separately in three cars.

"This incident happened in the blink of an eye," the bereaved told Bernama at the Sungai Buloh Hospital Forensic Unit yesterday. "I did not see how it happened. I only heard a very loud bang, which made me stop [the car] to see what had happened."

"I saw that Mat Zaki and Mya were outside the vehicle [probably having been thrown out]," Othman said.

He added, "Mat Zaki’s younger brother, Mohd Fauzi, was [also] in the vehicle [while] the other children were in the back seat."

According to Bernama, Sungai Buloh district police chief Supt Shafa'aton Abu Bakar confirmed the incident, stating preliminary investigations into the incident uncovered that both vehicles involved in the crash were travelling southbound.

It is believed that the Proton Wira driven by Mohd Fauzi, the younger brother of the deceased, lost control and collided with the road divider. The car had spun around after crashing, causing the Toyota Vios driving behind it to hit the front side of the car.

"The victims, Mat Zaki and Mya Zaratul Nuraishah, were confirmed dead at the scene by the Sungai Buloh Hospital medical assistant, while the other injured victims were taken to Sungai Buloh Hospital for further treatment," the police chief said.

The other three children in the vehicle, Nur Zafrina Nashtasya Mat Zaki, 15, her brother Muhammad Iman Zafran, nine, and their cousin Muhammad Fuad Syraf Mohd Fauzi, 11, sustained only minor injuries.

The family in the Toyota Vios that collided with the car of the stricken family only suffered minor injuries.
