Father Stabs Daughter To Death Over RM650K Online Shopping Debt
The father had to use his own savings and borrowed money from their relatives to pay off his daughter's debts.
A father in China stabbed his daughter to death after she incurred up to 1 million yuan (RM650,000) in online shopping debts in just three years
The victim, Liu Juan, 30, became addicted to online shopping in 2019. The family's credit card had records of her making impulsive purchases every one or two days, reported Xinmin Evening News.
Her online shopping addiction was so severe that they would receive multiple packages every day, to the point where even before an older package could be opened, a new one would arrive at their door.
However, when it came time to pay off her online purchases, Liu Juan realised she was not able to cover all of her debts
Liu Juan, who was a security guard with her father, Liu Gang, was only earning 3,000 yuan (RM1,952) to 4,000 yuan (RM2,603) a month.
Unable to cough up the cash, she turned to her father for assistance. As he, too, was unable to pay off the debt on his own, he was forced to fork out his savings and borrow money from a relative.
Unfortunately, after her father cleared off her first debt, Liu Juan continued to check out more items in her shopping cart
As her debts continued to rise, Liu Juan went to her aunt and begged her for a loan of 400,000 yuan (RM260,371) so she could pay off the additional debt. She also obtained a personal loan from an online platform she discovered.
Liu Gang was unaware of what was going on until he received multiple calls regarding the repayment of his daughter's loans.
He grew angrier because of his daughter's behaviour, which put a strain on their relationship.
Frustrated, Liu Gang went to his relatives and asked for more money to settle his daughter's debts once more
When the relatives learned what had happened between the father and daughter, they lent him an additional 20,000 yuan (RM13,018), but it was still insufficient to clear Liu Juan's debt.
On the day of the incident, Liu Gang went out for drinks with his relatives to ask for more money.
While they were drunk, a relative speculated that his daughter might be involved with loan sharks. In a drunken stupor, he said that he would die with his daughter because of their debt.
The relative who was with him lent him 30,000 yuan (RM19,527) and Liu Gang went home right after.
When Liu Gang returned home, he got into an argument with his daughter about her debt repayment
During the dispute, the father took a fruit knife and stabbed Liu Juan to death. He then called the police and waited for them to arrive at the front door.
Liu Gang was convicted of intentional homicide and the Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court sentenced him to 15 years in prison, as well as four years without political rights.
