Fisheries Dept To Investigate Viral Report Of Suspected Piranha In Pahang

The Department of Fisheries (DOF) will work with Aquaria KLCC to determine whether piranhas are present at Klau Dam in Raub, Pahang, after photos and a video of a suspected piranha went viral

In a statement on 17 September, the department said it had taken note of the viral photos and video of an alleged red-bellied piranha (Pygocentrus nattereri) caught in a cast net on 26 August.

The department said the fish appeared to have characteristics consistent with the Pygocentrus genus. However, it could not definitively identify the species without a physical specimen.

"The fish was reported to have died and been disposed of by the individual who caught it before investigations were carried out," it said.

According to Bernama, the department will now work with Aquaria KLCC to obtain a live suspected specimen for DNA analysis to determine its genus and species.

"We cannot confirm whether it is a piranha or pacu because we do not have a physical specimen. I hope this collaboration with Aquaria KLCC will help resolve the matter, including identifying the fish at the genus and species levels," " DOF Director-General Datuk Adnan Hussain told reporters on Tuesday, 22 September.

The DOF has urged the public not to panic as only one suspected specimen has been reported in the area so far

Adnan said field investigations by the Pahang State Fisheries Office found no additional catches or related incidents in the area up to 15 September.

"Based on data and evidence gathered so far, there is no evidence to show the presence of an established or breeding piranha population at Klau Dam.

"The public need not panic. However, the department will continue targeted monitoring to ensure any new developments can be identified and appropriate action is taken," he said.

The department also warned against releasing non-native fish, such as piranhas, which are native to South America, into Malaysian waters

Adnan said non-native species can become invasive and disrupt inland aquatic ecosystems, local fish populations, and aquatic biodiversity.

He also urged inland fishermen to report or surrender any fish resembling piranhas to the department for examination.

"Currently, we do not have concrete evidence of a population of this species at Klau Dam. There have also been no reports of unusual mortality among local fish species or attacks involving anglers or members of the public," he added.
