The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) enforcement team conducted a surprise inspection at four eateries on Tuesday, July 26, but only one of them met the hygiene standard

In a Facebook post by MBPP, the three businesses that violated health regulations were ordered to close effective on Tuesday for 14 days, and they are expected to undergo a thorough cleaning operation without any compromise.

The restaurants were said to have breached several health codes, and such violations would give a bad impression and negative effects to the restaurant managements

"During the operation, rat droppings were found inside two premises. The owner of the eatery placed raw food items less than 20cm from the floor surface, which is unacceptable," MBPP mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang was reported as saying by New Straits Times.

MBPP also found that dirty waste water and oil were released into public drains. Grease traps were also found to be improperly maintained, among other violations.

A total of eight compounds were issued to the premises that did not follow the basic health safety procedures

Two of the compounds were issued for operating without a licence and placing raw food items less than 20cm from the floor level.

Yew also mentioned that the third restaurant received a low score of below 50%.

Moving forward, MBPP will continue with routine inspections to ensure basic hygiene is met and food safety is maintained constantly.

This is not the first time food premises in Penang have violated the health code:
