The Kuala Terengganu High Court has sentenced a 23-year-old woman to 30 years in prison for killing her friend during their time in Form Six

Judge Datuk Hassan Abdul Ghani meted out the punishment after the accused, Siti Nur Athirah Azmi, pleaded guilty to murdering Siti Nur Surya Ismail, 19, at a house in Kampung Lubuk Batu, Jalan Bukit Tadok, Telemong, Hulu Terengganu, between 8.30am and 9.30am on 1 November 2020.

The accused was ordered to serve the sentence from the day she was arrested on 2 November 2020.

She was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code

While the charge provides for the death penalty or a jail sentence of between 30 to 40 years, with a minimum of 12 strokes of the rotan, the court opted solely for incarceration.

This decision reflects the recent amendments to the Abolishment of the Mandatory Death Penalty Act 2023.

At the time of the incident, it was reported that the victim's body was found with several stab wounds. Her left arm had also been severed.

The 19-year-old victim was found lying in the living room of her house by her 15-year-old sister, who had just returned from school, according to a Bernama report.

Authorities had suspected robbery as the motive behind the crime, noting that hundreds of ringgit, two handbags, and two mobile phones belonging to the victim were reportedly missing.
