Formula 1 has announced a historic 10-year agreement to bring the World Championship back to Africa, confirming the Formula 1 African Grand Prix on its calendar from the early 2030s
The landmark contract marks a monumental milestone for motorsport, securing F1's return to the African continent for the first time since the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami.
The long-term project follows years of collaboration between Formula 1, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), and local authorities to establish a sustainable, world-class racing venue.
The inaugural race will take place on a purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, situated roughly 40km south of the capital city of Kigali and adjacent to the new Kigali International Airport
Developed to FIA Grade 1 standards by the Rwanda Development Board, the venue will incorporate the region's natural undulating terrain, often referred to as the 'Land of a Thousand Hills', to create a technical, high-speed track layout designed by former F1 driver Alex Wurz alongside Tilke Engineers and Architects.
Beyond hosting the premier racing series, the Bugesera facility is envisioned as a year-round hub capable of staging international motorsport competitions, corporate conferences, and global entertainment events.

"With Rwanda joining the calendar from the next decade, our sport will race in every inhabited continent, bringing the World Championship closer than ever to fans around the globe," Domenicali said.
"This is about much more than hosting a Grand Prix. Together, we can create lasting economic and social benefits through tourism, investment, skills development and local business growth."

The drivers appeared enthusiastic about the new circuit
"I've always said that we need to have a Grand Prix in Africa. It is, for me, the most important continent and the most beautiful continent. We're on all the other continents but not that one, and there should be no reason for it," said seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.
"It's something I've been pushing for in the background and Stefano's been amazing. He's flown to Africa so many times over the last couple of years, speaking to lots of different people," added the Ferrari driver.
Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen also weighed in.
"For sure, if that's possible that would be great. We want to race in a lot of different places in the world, so I really hope it can be pushed through.
"I've been to Rwanda once, of course. But let's wait, let's see if it all goes through. I think we are all very excited if that would happen," said the four time championship winner.

Mercedes driver George Russell said he enjoyed his recent trip to Africa.
"I was in Africa earlier this year and I really, really loved my time there.
"Formula 1 is a worldwide sport. Africa is the only continent we don't race on and it's about time we had a race there."
