The Selangor government will soon set up a 4G telecommunications system in the state that will provide residents access to free wireless Internet (Wi-Fi).

The technology will be based on the‎ Optical Distribution Antenna System (Odas), said Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim in his summary of the State Budget Dialogue 2015 at the Shah Alam Convention Centre.‎

Science and Technology executive council member Dr Daroyah Alwi predicted that the state government would rake in billions of ringgit from the project in the next seven years.‎ He said that state authorities and mosques would generate income from renting out the structures.

The state-wide installation of broadband internet (wifi) in Selangor is being rapidly implemented and is expected to be completed by early January 2013.

The Selangorku WiFi program is part of RM2.74mil initiative to develop rural Selangor areas. The Wi-Fi connection under the project has a 2-megahertz bandwidth within a 200m radius and can cater 100 users simultaneously. Each user will be limited to 30 minutes of continuous surfing.
