Malaysia will introduce the MediAsas health plan in January 2027, with the government promising affordable premiums and a pricing structure designed to make hospital costs more predictable
Prime Minister cum Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the plan during his Budget 2027 speech today, 9 October, saying hospital charges under MediAsas would be based on the type of diagnosis and treatment received.
The approach is intended to help patients better understand and manage their healthcare expenses.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with fewer than 75 employees will receive a government subsidy of RM200 towards each eligible worker's first-year MediAsas premium.
The subsidy will be capped at 50 workers per company, meaning an eligible business could receive up to RM10,000 in subsidies.
The government expects the initiative to benefit up to 200,000 workers.
EPF members under 55 can use Akaun Sejahtera
Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) members below the age of 55 will be allowed to pay their MediAsas premiums using savings in Akaun Sejahtera.
The provision offers eligible members another way to finance their health coverage, although the announcement does not specify further details about plan eligibility, premium amounts, or coverage limits.
Meanwhile, private hospital bills will use standardised fee categories
The government will also introduce standardised and transparent fee categories for private hospital bills from 2027.
Anwar said the measure is intended to help patients understand individual charges and minimise price distortions in private healthcare.
The government will also expand electronic medical records based on the principle of one person, one record.
Separately, the e-CKAPS portal is being developed to allow private healthcare facilities to complete licensing processes entirely online from 2027. The government is targeting a reduction of up to 65% in processing time.
Further implementation details on the MediAsas plan and the standardised billing requirements have yet to be provided in the announcement.
