A 25-year-old woman was saved by her husband when their neighbour broke into the house and tried to rape her at Pongsu Seribu, Penang yesterday, 1 July
According to New Straits Times, the suspect is a 21-year-old man staying next door to the victim.
The incident happened around 3pm when she was alone at home and heard the sound of footsteps on her roof.
When she walked out of the room to inspect the source of the sound, a man suddenly appeared before her.
Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) district police chief ACP Noorzainy Mohd Noor said the suspect pulled her hands and forced her back into the room, before starting to hug her
"The victim tried to escape by taking a bottle of water and hitting the man's head. But it didn't shake the man off," Metro Harian reported Noorzainy as saying.
The man proceeded to tear the victim's dress and attempted to rape her.
At that moment, the victim's 32-year-old husband happened to return home, stopping the assault in the nick of time
"The victim's husband, who just returned from work, heard his wife's cries for help, and entered the house through the kitchen where he stumbled upon the suspect," revealed Noorzainy today, 2 July.
"The husband caught the man, but the latter hit him on the head with a piece of wood."
"Seeing that the husband was injured, the suspect fled."
Initial investigation found that the suspect is believed to have entered the victim's house through an opening in the kitchen
The 21-year-old suspect was later arrested by the police in front of his house. The piece of wood used in the confrontation was also seized by the police.
The urine test of the suspect showed that he was not under the influence of drugs during the assault.
The case will be investigated under Section 455 and 354 of the Penal Code for housebreaking and assault or use of criminal force to any person with the intention to outrage modesty respectively.
If convicted, the suspect can be imprisoned up to 14 years for the first offence, and 10 years for the second offence. Both offences are liable to a fine or whipping as well.
