A home owner's extension of their ground floor apartment was torn down by the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) because it was built illegally

In a Facebook statement posted on Tuesday, 31 May, MPAJ said the demolition took place at Flat UTM in Ampang because the renovation of the unit was being done without approval from the local council.

MPAJ said "it was a pity" that the additional structures had to be torn down for using the flat's common property space.

It also said the act of renovating a house without approval according to Act 133 and Act 757 would bring various risks and problems to residents.

"The safety of surrounding residents should also be taken into consideration," the statement read

It added that the extension of the house would interfere with the rescue work in the event of any disaster such as a fire and so on.

Stratified residences such as flats, apartments and condominiums are bound by Act 757 where parcel lots are limited to the area of the plots purchased.

According to the same statement, the extension was torn down on 25 May.

Photos of the demolition work went viral on social media recently, prompting netizens to criticise the flat owner

A comment under the MPAJ Facebook statement reads "I don't know what to say, hopefully all buildings under MPAJ supervision is properly monitored so that cases like this do not happen anymore,".

The photos also spread to Twitter where a user expressed confusion on why the flat owner did not just buy a larger home if they have the expenses to do so instead of doing the illegal extension.

"Y'all really bought a square and thought you own the building. You don't even own the land," wrote another Twitter user.
