The masked assailant who killed two officers and injured another during a brazen attack at a Johor Bahru police station this morning, 17 May, is believed to have been a member of the terror group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI)

JI, an Indonesia-based militant Islamist group, was founded in 1993 by Abu Bakar Bashir and Abdullah Sungkar, both Indonesians. The group is notorious for bombings in the early 2000s. While it has been weakened, the group still poses a threat with its cells in Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines.

Malaysia, along with the United Nations, the European Union, and the US, have designated JI as a terror group.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said five family members of the suspect, who was shot dead, have been arrested to assist in the investigation into the brazen attack at the Ulu Tiram police station.

"[The family members] are aged between 15 and 62," Razarudin told the media, adding that the police also found several JI materials at the suspect's home.

Police have also identified more than 20 JI members in Johor following the attack.

The suspect, who had no prior criminal record, made preparations before attacking the police station at 2.45am today

In the attack at the Ulu Tiram police station, two policemen were killed and another was injured. The suspect was later shot dead at the scene by other officers.

Police later recovered a Walther P99 pistol and a HK MP5 rifle from him.

The injured policeman is currently in stable condition, said Razarudin.

Police have also arrested two other individuals who were at the Ulu Tiram police station to assist in the probe.

Meanwhile, security would be tightened at all police stations following the incident.
