Istana Negara: Muhyiddin To Be Caretaker PM Until A Successor Is Elected
The King believes that a General Election is not the best option at the moment after taking into consideration the safety and well-being of the people.
Istana Negara announced that Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will function as caretaker Prime Minister from now on until a successor is elected
In a statement uploaded on Facebook, Istana Negara said that Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah made the decision after meeting with Muhyiddin today, 16 August.
During the 30-minute meeting, Muhyiddin handed over his resignation letter as Prime Minister. Following the resignation, he was appointed as the caretaker Prime Minister until a new Prime Minister is elected.
This is in accordance with Article 40(2)(a) and 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution
The Federal Constitution states that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong must elect a member of the Dewan Rakyat who, in his favour, might hold the majority support of the members of Dewan Rakyat as the new Prime Minister to chair the Cabinet of Malaysia.
Besides that, in the statement, Istana Negara noted that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong showed his appreciation to Muhyiddin and the rest of the Cabinet for their efforts in managing the country since 1 March 2020, especially in the fight against COVID-19.
The King also believes that the execution of the 15th General Election is not the best option at the moment after taking into consideration the safety and well-being of the people
The statement also noted how he hoped that the ceaseless political strife will end for the sake of the people and the economy that has been threatened by COVID-19.
