Nor Shamsiah's appointment as the new Bank Negara Malaysia governor makes a triumphant return after her unceremonious departure from the central bank in 2016

According to The Star Online, on 15 November 2016, when Nor Shamsiah left Bank Negara, there wasn't any official announcement of her departure and even her name was discreetly removed from the central bank's organisation chart on its website.

She was spearheading the investigations into 1MDB before she left BNM in 2016. Her departure was amidst a clampdown by the Barisan Nasional Government on officials who were investigating the trail of money that flowed out of 1MDB.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has consented to her appointment, a spokesman for Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said

Nor Shamsiah, who joined Bank Negara in 1987 and rose from the ranks of officer-in-charge of supervising the banking sector to assistant governor, worked with the central bank for 30 years, where she was involved in crafting policy on financial governance, besides overseeing the banking sector, insurance and takaful companies, financial intelligence and enforcement, and talent management.
