Japan Govt Invites M'sians To Apply For Its 2025 Undergraduate & Postgraduate Scholarships
The scholarships cover tuition, monthly allowances, and a round-trip flight ticket to Japan.
The Japanese government is inviting Malaysians to apply for its 2025 MEXT scholarship programmes for a chance to study in Japan next year
The Japanese Embassy in Malaysia announced that four types of scholarship programmes are open to Malaysians for the 2025 academic year.
The undergraduate, college of technology, and specialised training college scholarships are aimed at SPM leavers, while the postgraduate scholarship programme targets Malaysians under the age of 35.
The scholarships cover monthly allowances, all tuition and examinations fees, as well as a round-trip flight ticket to Japan
During the term of the scholarship, undergraduate, college of technology, and specialised training college grantees will receive a monthly allowance of 117,000 yen (approximately RM4,000), while postgraduate grantees will receive 143,000 yen (approximately RM5,000).
Here are the four MEXT scholarship programmes available:
1. Undergraduate studies
This scholarship covers a five to seven-year-long Bachelor's degree course starting in April 2025.
Criteria for eligibility:
– Applicants must be between 18 and 25 years of age, as of 1 April 2025.
– Applicants must have completed SPM with at least 11 years of formal education. Students who have completed STPM, UEC, Matriculation, or Diploma may also apply with their results.
– Applicants must have at least 9As (A+ or A) in SPM, including in English, Mathematics/Add Math, Chemistry, and Physics/Biology, depending on their course.
– Applicants must have a good command of English or Japanese with excellent results in other major subjects.
The government is looking for students with an interest in the fields of:
– Natural Sciences (such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Agriculture, Food Science, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Medicine, Dentistry, etc.)
– Social Sciences (such as Law, Politics, Pedagogy, Sociology, Literature, History, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Japanese Language, etc.)

2. A Diploma course at a College of Technology
Colleges of technology, or kosen in Japanese, are institutions of higher education that offer engineering courses.
The tenure of the scholarship spans four years, comprising a three-year-long Diploma course starting in April 2025 and a one-year intensive Japanese language course.
Criteria for eligibility:
– Applicants must be between 18 and 25 years of age, as of 1 April 2025.
– Applicants must have completed SPM with at least 11 years of formal education. Students who have completed STPM, UEC, Matriculation, or Diploma may also apply with their results.
– Applicants must have at least 7As (A+ or A) in SPM, including in English and Mathematics.
– Applicants must have a good command of English or Japanese with excellent results in other major subjects.
Applicants can choose from the following fields of study:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical and Electronic Engineering
- Information, Communication, and Network Engineering
- Materials Engineering
- Architecture
- Civil Engineering
- Maritime Engineering

3. A Diploma course at a Specialised Training College
This scholarship covers a three-year-long Diploma course starting in April 2025, which includes a one-year intensive Japanese language course.
Criteria for eligibility:
– Applicants must be between 18 and 25 years of age, as of 1 April 2025.
– Applicants must have completed SPM with at least 11 years of formal education. Students who have completed STPM, UEC, Matriculation, or Diploma may also apply with their results.
– Applicants must have at least 7As (A+ or A) in SPM, including in English and Mathematics.
– Applicants must have a good command of English or Japanese with excellent results in other major subjects.
The Japanese government is seeking students with an interest in one of the following the fields:
– Technology
– Personal Care and Nutrition
– Education and Welfare
– Business
– Fashion and Home Economics
– Culture and General Education

4. Postgraduate studies
This scholarship covers a one-and-a-half or two-year postgraduate course starting in April 2025, which includes a six-month intensive course of the Japanese Language.
The applicant's area of study must be aligned with their previous academic or professional experience.
Criteria for eligibility:
– Applicants must be under 35 years of age, as of 1 April 2025.
– Applicants must be a Bachelor's or Master's degree holder with a minimum CGPA of 3.4 and with 16 years of formal education. Students who are in their final year of studies at their respective universities are also eligible to apply.
– Applicants who are civil servants must apply through Malaysia's Public Service Department (JPA) under their 'Penawaran Dalam Perkhidmatan' management unit.
The Japanese government is looking for students with an interest in one of the following fields:
– Humanities and Social Sciences (such as Literature, History, Aesthetics, Laws, Politics, Economics, Commerce, Pedagogy, Psychology, Sociology, Music, Fine Arts, Business Administration, etc)
– Natural Sciences (such as Pure Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Fisheries, Pharmacology, Medicine, Dentistry, Home Economics, etc)
Applications for the undergraduate programmes are open from now until 5 April 2024, while the deadline for postgraduate applications is 19 April 2024.
