A girl who was reported missing by her family in Johor Bahru at the age of 14 has been found seven years later in Langkawi, Kedah
The teenager, now 21, was discovered by police on Wednesday night, 17 June, and was found to be living with her child, according to China Press.
Investigations also revealed that she is married to a foreign national.
According to Langkawi district police chief ACP Khairul Azhar Nuruddin, police located the woman after receiving information from members of the public.
She was found during a police inspection at a house in Kuah
Langkawi deputy police chief Supt Samsulmuddin Sulaiman said a police team conducted a check at a residence in Taman Helang Perdana at about 11pm.
During the inspection, officers found a 21-year-old woman inside the house.
A subsequent check against missing persons records confirmed that she was the same individual reported missing from Johor Bahru in 2019.
The missing persons report had originally been lodged with the Majidee police district in Johor Bahru.
"Investigations revealed that the woman was residing in the house with a child, while her foreign husband was not at home at the time," Samsulmuddin said.
According to him, the woman admitted that she had been living in Langkawi since leaving her family home in Johor Bahru seven years ago.
Police have since informed her family of her whereabouts and are making arrangements for the next steps.
The circumstances surrounding her disappearance have not been disclosed.
Her family reportedly traced clues through purchases made under the MyKasih Aid Programme
As participation in the programme requires the use of a MyKad, the records allegedly showed transactions being made at several shops in Langkawi.
The information led the family to suspect that the missing girl could be on the island, helping to narrow their search.
During the years she was missing, the girl's father reportedly died.
Her mother is also said to be in poor health.
Police have not announced whether any further action will be taken following the discovery.
