FOUR new offences have been added into the Kejara demerit system as part of the Road Transport Department's revamp to take full effect in January.

According to JPJ enforcement director Jaafar Mohamed, illegal racing will no longer be an offence under the Kejara demerit system

The NST report, quoting the RTD enforcement director Jaafar Mohamed, also said that illegal racing is no longer an offence. The traffic police are better equipped to take stiffer action as compared to the Kejara.

Kejara demerit system offenders will face license suspensions or revocation of driver's licence

Under the present system, a motorist who commits different types offences will be penalised by being docked demerit points. An offender who holds a Competent Driving Licence (CDL) and breaches the maximum 15-point annual ceiling will have action taken against him, while probationary drivers cannot accumulate more than 10 points.

1) First offence - suspension of driver's license for no longer than 6 months. 2) Second offence - suspension of driver's license for no longer than 12 months.

3) Third offence - suspension of driver's license for no longer than 6 months. 4) Revocation of driver's license for a third offence committed within a duration of 5 years.

Offenders driving under a license suspension period can face a 6 month prison sentence

When a driver's CDL license is suspended, he/she will not be allowed to drive or attempt to acquire any kind of driver's license, such as a learner's permit, within the duration of the suspension.

Whereas for the holder of a 'P' license who has the license suspended, he or she will not be allowed to drive or attempt to acquire any kind of driver's license for a duration of twelve months beginning from the date the initial license is surrendered.

Penalty: Operating a vehicle within a license suspension period will result in a RM1,000 fine or a six (6) month prison sentence.

Bonus point: 7 points will be deducted from CDL license holders with less than 15 points and do no commit any offences in 24 months

For Competent Driving Licence (CDL) license holders who acquire less than 15 demerit points, who do not commit any of the listed offences for a period of 24 consecutive months, 7 demerit points will be deducted from them.
