A Klang couple has shared their account of Rocky, the dog that died during a capture operation in Pandamaran that sparked public outrage
In a video shared by animal activist Shima Aris on Instagram on Saturday, 1 August, the couple, identified as Rohini and Tamil, said Rocky was their pet and had been living with them for two years.
According to the speaker in the video, the couple allowed Rocky to roam the neighbourhood at night despite not having a dog licence, saying he was familiar to residents and helped deter theft.
The couple also claimed that Rocky had not disturbed residents or bitten anyone
Addressing claims that Rocky chased motorcycles, the speaker claimed that the dog only reacted after being provoked by people who had thrown stones and sticks at him.
The speaker in the video also alleged that Rocky was restrained with a metal cable, claiming the dog died as a result of the restraint
According to the speaker, Rohini attempted to cut the cable to free Rocky but was unable to do so.
The speaker further alleged that Rohini was struck with a stick during the incident, although she did not suffer visible injuries.
The couple said a police report has been lodged, while the Selangor Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) has taken a statement from Rohini as part of ongoing investigations.
According to FMT, DVS has also taken statements from a suspect and several witnesses in its probe.
The dog's death drew widespread attention after Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia (SAFM) alleged that Rocky was beaten, strangled, and dragged by several men despite residents' attempts to stop the incident, while MBDK denied wrongdoing, saying the dog died after a struggle with members of the public disrupted its capture efforts.
