"Janji Bapa" — Last Kampung Owner In Singapore Refuses To Sell Land Worth RM225 Million
Sng said she is determined to keep the village running as long as she lives.
Amidst the relentless march of urban development, a woman in Singapore is standing her ground to conserve the last remaining kampung in the country
According to property content creators Wan and Zal on TikTok, the village, Kampong Lorong Buangkok, is sitting on a piece of land valued at a staggering SGD70 million (RM225 million).
The duo recently interviewed its owner, Sng Mui Hong, who has steadfastly refused to sell it.
She said the land was purchased in 1956 by her father, Sng Teow Koon, who was a traditional Chinese medicine seller
Speaking in fluent Malay, Sng proudly introduced the kampung that has been there for 69 years. Despite tempting offers, she has refused to sell the land that has 20 homes on it.
Sng explained that keeping the land was a promise she made to her late father.
"He wanted me to keep this land for his children and grandchildren. Selling it would be wrong," she said.
Sng added that she is determined to keep the village running as long as she lives, and hopes that her family will continue its preservation after she's gone
"After me, it is up to my relatives. They know the promise to their grandfather and they will keep the land as it is," she said.
Wan and Zal explained in their video that because the land is freehold, the Singapore government has no authority to acquire it as long as Sng holds on.
The video has since garnered over 750,000 views, touching the hearts of netizens who praised Sng for her unwavering loyalty
"This is a good auntie. The land she owns has the only kampung in Singapore. She rents those homes out to the residents," said a TikTok user.
"Wow, a rare human who isn't greedy for money and keeps their promises," said another.
"Auntie speaks Malay very well," commended another netizen.
