A local author and motivational speaker, who is battling Neurofibromatosis (NF), is in need of more funds for her treatment and care after being bedridden for over a year

33-year-old Yvonne Foong has been living with NF Type 2 since she was 16 years old.

The condition is "a set of distinct genetic disorders that cause tumours to grow along various types of nerves" and also affects "the development of non-nervous tissues such as bones and skin", Foong's website explains.

Foong was due to fly to the United States in May last year, but suffered a fall that required hospitalisation. She has been bedridden since then.

In a Facebook post, a representative for Foong wrote:

"Yvonne has been bedridden for slightly over a year. A physiotherapist has assessed her and noted that her right calf has contracture. Yvonne is unable to sit up on her own, nor is she able to turn side-to-side while lying down."

Foong is currently being cared for by her 70-year-old mother, who also has health issues of her own

According to the post, Foong is in need of funds and other essentials such as:

- Physiotherapy sessions at least twice per week (approximately RM150/session),
- Two bags of diapers per week (approximately RM18/bag),
- Two cans of Ensure Gold Milk per week (approximately RM75/can),
- Emergency medical funding, and
- A long-term nurse who is willing to help on a pro-bono basis or sponsored by a kind individual.

"Yvonne's condition is unpredictable and may require urgent medical attention at any time. In May 2019, she spent about RM42,000 on her hospitalisation to clean up her stoma (to tube-feed directly to her stomach). The hospitalisation significantly depleted her funds," the post explained.

In support, Foong's friends have also encouraged members of the public to help fundraising efforts by purchasing her books at RM35 each

"Yvonne is a talented writer who had (sic) written two profound books prior to her fall namely, 'I'm Not Sick, Just A Bit Unwell' and her sequel, 'A Life Worth Living'," one friend shared.
