Video Of Woman Walking Along Busy Traffic Due To No Pedestrian Walkways Goes Viral
"I'm scared for my life every time I'm travelling to and from work," Azimah lamented.
A Malaysian took to Twitter to document her daily commute to and from work, displaying the precarious route she has to always take to get to her destination
In the video, Twitter user @justazimah recorded herself walking towards the Pusat Bandar Damansara MRT station after work, using the busy highway as her walkway.
The video showed cars whizzing past Azimah in close proximity, with no barriers to shield her from oncoming vehicles.
"Look at the quality of the Malaysian pedestrian walkways that are so user-friendly," Azimah sarcastically said.
"If I should trip even just a little, I'll be hit by oncoming traffic. The MRT station is close by but there's no proper walkway to it," she added.
Azimah said she is fully aware that there are shuttle buses to MRT stations, however, she cannot afford to wait for however long it takes the shuttle buses to arrive and pick up passengers
"I am aware that shuttle buses are provided to commute between MRT Semantan to office areas. But not [everyone] can wait for the bus when it does not come every three to five minutes. The MRT station itself is just five to 10 minutes away from my office, so why do we not have a proper pedestrian walk?" Azimah asked in the Twitter thread.
The disgruntled Malaysian suggested solutions the government can take in order to create a safer environment for pedestrians.
"They (the government) can put traffic cones [along the sidewalk] to differentiate the pedestrian walkway and road. For me, that is enough to help me feel more secure," she suggested.
In a conversation with SAYS, Azimah said that she fears for her life each time she travels to and from work, as she faces oncoming speeding cars and lorries on a daily basis
She said that she feels tired, anxious, and angry that she has to be scared to travel every day, and wonders when she will ever be able to walk safely on a proper walkway.
Azimah also pleaded to the governing bodies to plan alternative pedestrian walkways whenever construction is conducted instead of giving excuses that it is not possible when pedestrians' safety should be the priority.
"Please make Malaysia a walkable country. Not a car-centric country," she said.
In January, a TikToker documented the daily struggle pedestrians have to go through to get to an MRT station:
