The Malaysian government will allocate an additional RM15 million next year to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at 1,000 schools nationwide

The move forms part of broader administrative measures aimed at strengthening student security and welfare in educational institutions.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the new funding line during the Prime Minister's Question Time (PMQT) session in the Dewan Rakyat on 6 October

According to the New Straits Times, the upcoming allocation builds upon previous government expenditure, which saw RM3 million earmarked for initial CCTV rollouts in schools alongside RM5 million designated specifically for fully residential institutions.

Addressing lawmakers, Anwar outlined several accompanying measures to safeguard students.

The government created 5,107 guidance and counselling teacher positions to support student development, while appointing 300 Malaysia Short-Term Employment Programme (MySTEP) personnel as assistant hostel wardens.

A total of 400 existing wardens also underwent specialised training focused on psychosocial skills and support mechanisms.

Under updated security protocols, police officers can now officially enter school grounds in uniform to strengthen safety measures and deter misconduct

Administrative authority has also been broadened, with principals, headmasters, and school disciplinary committees holding expanded oversight, while provisions allow disciplinary powers to be delegated directly to teachers.

The Ministry of Education has further revised the Student Discipline System, established a formal School Student Protection Policy, introduced routine mental health screenings, and set up designated feedback avenues for students to voice safety concerns.

The announcement came in response to a query from Indera Mahkota MP Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah on why security threats persist despite established guidelines

Anwar said that managing national school safety requires navigating an immense operational footprint comprising 10,259 schools, over 5.13 million students, and 428,339 teachers.

He stressed that while enforcement remains essential, continuous awareness among educators and students remains vital to maintaining a safe learning environment.
