Barista Nas Jaafar has made history by becoming the first Malaysian to win the World Brewers Cup, one of the world's most prestigious coffee brewing competitions
According to the World Coffee Championships, Nas emerged victorious over five other finalists from Australia, the Czech Republic, Hong Kong, South Korea, and France at the 2026 World Brewers Cup, held in Brussels, Belgium, from 25 to 27 June.
The competition brought together over 40 of the world's top baristas, all competing to showcase their expertise in manual filter coffee brewing.
Over two rounds, competitors were judged on their brewing technique, cup quality, consistency, as well as their ability to present their coffee and its tasting profile to the judges
Nas earned his place at the international competition after winning the Malaysia Brewers Cup in 2025
His globally-recognised victory is now being widely celebrated by Malaysia's specialty coffee community, with many describing the achievement as a proud moment for the industry.
"This win carries so much with it — the late nights, the pressure, the practice, the belief, and the quiet support from everyone who stood behind him along the way.
"Nas, thank you for your hard work, your dedication, and for carrying Malaysia with so much heart. Thank you for showing the world what our coffee community is capable of," wrote the Malaysia Specialty Coffee Association in an Instagram post.
