One of the five Malaysian suspects arrested in Japan for allegedly trafficking 5kg of cocaine concealed in their shoes claimed that airport staff had been bribed to let the group pass through without being checked

"I was told the airport staff had been paid, so we would not be checked," Fuji News Network (FNN) quoted the 24-year-old male suspect as saying.

However, FNN did not specify whether a bribe had actually been paid, reported the New Straits Times.

The news network reported that the five Malaysians were believed to have turned to drug smuggling due to financial difficulties.

Five Malaysians were arrested at Haneda Airport in Tokyo over the weekend when Japanese custom officers noticed one of them was wearing shoes with unusually thick soles

A subsequent inspection led to the discovery of 1kg of drugs, with 500g concealed in each shoe worth around 120 million yen (RM3.1 million).

Federal Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed that the suspects comprised two men and three women, all Malaysians.

He said police would send an investigation team to Japan to obtain more information, including whether the case was linked to Malaysian or international drug syndicates.
