A man died after being attacked by a buffalo while preparing the animal for Hari Raya Haji sacrificial rites in Johor on Wednesday, 27 May

According to Bernama, Seri Alam district police chief ACP Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the incident occurred at about 10am in Kampung Tenang, Ulu Tiram.

The victim, identified as Ahmad Shah Meerasa, 45, suffered severe injuries and was rushed to Sultanah Aminah Hospital for treatment.

"However, he was confirmed dead at about 11pm on the same day," Mohd Sohaimi said in a statement on Thursday, 28 May.

A 40-second video of the incident has since gone viral on social media, showing the buffalo charging aggressively around a yard after several men appeared to lose control of the animal. The buffalo then charged at the victim and tossed him into the air.

The victim's niece, who wished to be known only as Mira, said Ahmad Shah was gored in the left thigh by the buffalo's horn

She said her uncle and his six siblings were trying to tie the buffalo for the korban ceremony when the animal became loose.

"At the time of the incident, some family members were eating while others were washing dishes. The buffalo suddenly became agitated and turned around before goring his thigh until his trousers were torn up to the upper part," she told the national news agency.

Despite suffering serious injuries and losing a significant amount of blood, Mira said her uncle still managed to walk to a four-wheel-drive vehicle and climb into the back before collapsing.

She added that two other individuals were also injured after being dragged by the rope attached to the buffalo.

According to Mira, the buffalo was not slaughtered following the incident as villagers were still in shock over what had happened.

Post-mortem findings later confirmed that Ahmad Shah died from vascular injuries to his left leg

Police have classified the case as a sudden death and referred the matter to the Johor Veterinary Services Department.
