A horrific child abuse case in Guangdong, China has sparked massive outrage online

The Internet is furious after a father forgave his girlfriend for beating his 18-month-old toddler to death.

According to South China Morning Post, the toddler tragically died from a ruptured liver, pancreas, and intestines after suffering multiple kicks to his abdomen.

The boy's mother, Xie, uncovered the abuse just as her ex-husband, Li, attempted to cremate the child without an autopsy

Xie contacted the police after a hospital doctor noticed that the toddler's abdomen was abnormally swollen.

An investigation revealed that Li's girlfriend, Guo, had kicked the child multiple times on three occasions after losing her patience.

The beatings reportedly took place three days before and one day before the child's death.

Li defended his decision to sign a letter of understanding to forgive Guo, claiming he believed she had no intention of harming the boy

Beijing Zhongwen Law Firm lawyer Liu Kai said that China's Criminal Law penalises cruel actions causing death with sentences as severe as the death penalty.

The lawyer added that Li's letter carries far less legal weight because the child's mother vehemently opposes it.

"The father's indifference is more chilling than the abuser's fist," an online observer commented.
