Why This Man Sold His Iswara For 10 Cents
He's not crazy.
Random acts of kindness are not unheard of in Malaysia but this man's action may come as a surprise to many. He sold his car for a mere 10 sen!
If you thought, "He must be mad", you are wrong.
A few months ago, J Senthil Kumar decided to help a single mother by selling off his Proton Iswara car for only 10 sen.
People came to know about this when local social activist, Kuan Chee Heng, highlighted this on his Facebook account. Kuan is known for his '10-sen initiatives' where he would offer services such as ferrying the sick, disabled and poor for only 10 sens and "selling" household items for 10 sen each.
While Malaysians were given a name and face to remember the person who sold his car for 10 sen, we never got to hear from the man himself until recently
A report by Sinar Harian yesterday, 5 February, reveals the heart of this generous man who wanted to contribute to the needy.
It all started when Senthil decided to sell off his car which he had been using for the last 14 years, after he bought a new one in 2015.
He went to inquire how much he would get if he traded in the car to a used car dealer.
"I put off my plans to sell the car when the used car dealer told me that the car can only be sold for RM2,000. Actually, I was reluctant to sell the car as it had a lot contributions since I was in college."
"I thought it would be great if I can give away the car for free to anyone who needs it," he said.
A friend suggested to hand the car over to a social activist before giving it to those in need.
After some consideration, Senthil finally gave his car away for only 10 sen to Kuan and trusted that it will be in good hands
Later, Kuan introduced him to a single mother living in Taman Pingggiran Subang, Selangor. She was the one who received his car.
It was reported that Senthil never knew who she was in the beginning as he didn't question Kuan on who will be receiving the car, hoping and knowing that the social activist will pass the car to someone who really needs it.
It was only after he was introduced to the single mother that Senthil got to know about the woman's living conditions. She has been living in a low cost flat after her husband passed away about six years ago.
"Although she is a Malay, I didn't mind helping as they were in need. I only found out that a single mother received the car when I saw it on Mr Kuan's social media account," he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.
Not only did Senthil "sell" the car for a ridiculously cheap price, he even went to great lengths to ensure the car is in its best condition before giving it away
"Before handing over the car, I sent it to be serviced and got the to exchange serviced and got a new battery for the car because I didn't want to trouble the recipient."
"For me, if the intention is to help others, there is no need to look at the race or religion of others. Help should be given from one human being to another," he told Sinar Harian.
He reportedly said that he wanted to give away the car for free but agreed to sell the car for 10 sen as a symbolic gesture. He still keeps the 10 sen coin he received as a memorabilia.
Senthil's generosity has enabled a family to commute more conveniently around the city
The new owner of the Proton Iswara, Rohaya Md Isa, is extremely grateful to receive the car that has provided much comfort for her family despite it being in a used condition. The 46-year-old was very moved and touched to learn that there are kind people out there who were willing to donate a car for her family.
It was reported that Rohaya uses the car to send her children to school and also to get to the hospital for her follow-up treatment for cancer.
"Before this, we used to ride a motorcycle if we wanted to go anywhere, rain or shine. Now that we have a car, it is more convenient for us."
"I didn't know who donated the car, and I just found out that he is of a different race. How pure is his heart to help our family. Thank you so much," she reportedly said.
