Wielding a knife, the man stabbed eight students and a teacher before he took his own life, the report said. Three of the students died, and the six other victims have been hospitalized, Xinhua reported. Two of the students are seriously hurt, it said.

According to reports, the attacker, who was identified as Chen Yanfu, entered a grade five class at about 10.20am Monday and stabbed a female teacher and eight pupils with a fruit knife

The 43 year-old Chen Yanfu was the father of a student that attended Dongfang Elementary School in Yunxi County, Shiyan City, of Hubei. Monday was the first day of school this year.

Fu Qingyu, the school's headmaster, said Chen did not say a word after entering classrooms, just pulled out a knife and started stabbing anyone within reach.

A teacher in the classroom was stabbed in the chest while trying to stop the man from killing students, according to a teacher at the school speaking to the Chinese press. Two teachers burst into the classroom after hearing the screams and forced the assailant into the stairwell. When he realized the police were coming, Chen ran to the top of the five story building and jumped to his death.

An initial statement from the local police bureau stated that Chen was angry that the school prevented his daughter from registering for the new semester, because she didn't finish her homework

Chen carried out the attack because the school refused to register his daughter for the new school year because she had failed to complete her homework, police said. Yesterday was the first day of the new school year in many parts of the country.

Xinhua said Chen had apparently been able to enter the school unquestioned, with no security checks on visitors in place that day. While Xinhua said it was not immediately known how Chen entered the campus, state broadcaster China Central Television said Chen was allowed into the school after he said he went to register his daughter.

Those attacks include five incidents in 2010 that killed 17 people - 15 of them children - and wounded more than 80.

In March a man killed two relatives and then slashed 11 people, including six children, outside a school in Shanghai. Earlier this summer, police in Qianjiang , also in Hubei, killed a man whom they believed was attempting to "take over" a primary school, state media reported.
