A 36-year-old married woman, whose husband is currently serving a prison sentence, was arrested alongside her lover by the Melaka Islamic Religious Department (JAIM) for suspected khalwat (close proximity)
The enforcement operation took place at a residence in Batu Berendam during the early hours of Friday morning, 5 June, according to Berita Harian.
JAIM enforcement officers executed the raid at approximately 12.25am following a public tip-off regarding suspicious activities at the premises.
Upon entering and inspecting the house, authorities initially encountered the female suspect, who works as a clerk.
A more thorough search of the property led to a discovery when officers found a 36-year-old single man, who is employed at a cafe, hiding inside a wardrobe in a desperate bid to evade detection.
JAIM Director Datuk Md Azhan Samat confirmed the details of the raid, noting that initial background checks revealed the woman's spouse was actively serving a jail term
The unmarried male suspect and the married clerk were subsequently detained and escorted to the JAIM headquarters for formal documentation and deeper interrogation.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 53 of the Melaka Shariah Offences Enactment 1991.
This specific legal provision addresses khalwat, penalising an unrelated or unmarried couple found together in private spaces under circumstances that reasonably give rise to suspicion of illicit behaviour.
