A 34-year-old man was rescued after three hikers heard him crying for help from a ravine at Gunung Jerai in Kuala Muda, Kedah, last night, 30 June
The man had been missing since Sunday, 28 June, after setting out on a solo hike. He later told rescuers that he had slipped and fallen about 20m into the ravine.
According to the Kedah Fire and Rescue Department's operations centre, it received an emergency call from the three hikers at around 7.30pm.
A team of nine firefighters from the Guar Chempedak Fire and Rescue Station, led by Senior Fire Officer I Mohd Shahril Abdul Rahman, was dispatched to the scene.
Senior Operations Commander Ahmad Naufal Abdullah also arrived shortly after to oversee the rescue.
The hikers told firefighters they had heard someone shouting for help from a ravine below the edge of a cliff
Firefighters initially called out to the victim from above but received no response. They then set up a rope rescue system and descended into the ravine to search for him.
The man was eventually found safe about 20m below.
He told rescuers that he had been unable to call for help after losing all his belongings when he fell into the ravine.
Using a body harness and rope system, firefighters successfully brought him back to safety.
Despite being stranded in the ravine for three days, the man did not suffer any injuries and was reported to be in stable condition
He was handed over to the police at around 11.15pm for further investigation and to have his statement recorded, before being taken to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital in Sungai Petani for a medical examination.
