A mother elephant was seen staying by her deceased calf's side after her baby was hit by a vehicle on a road in Kampung Orang Asli Pengkalan Bukit, Johor

According to the New Straits Times, the Mersing fire and rescue station received a distress call about the accident along Jalan Felda Nitar at around 2.28am today, 1 July.

When a team of nine personnel arrived at the scene, they found that the calf had died from its injuries.

An adult elephant, believed to be the calf's mother, stayed at the scene, causing traffic disruptions in the area.

Johor Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said the Johor Elephant Action Unit was dispatched to handle the situation and safeguard public safety.

He added that the calf was later buried, while the mother elephant was fitted with a monitoring collar before being released back into the jungle after the operation was completed.

"The operation has been completed and the situation is now under control," he said.
