The Ministry of Health (MOH) has announced that there is a new COVID-19 cluster in Penang, dubbed as the Ara cluster

In a statement on Sunday, 20 September, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the index case of this cluster is a 44-year-old Malaysian, whose case number is 10,024.

The man tested positive after flying from Peninsular Malaysia to Sandakan, Sabah on 15 September.

Since the detection, 16 individuals have been screened

Among those, two have tested positive for COVID-19.

"The patient (Case 10,217) is a niece to the index case. The case tested positive on 19 September and has been admitted to Penang General Hospital for treatment."

The patient is only seven years old.

MOH said infection prevention measures, such as the disinfection and cleaning process, have been carried out at the locations involved.

"The cause of the infection is still under investigation," said Dr Noor Hisham.

For almost four months, Penang has recorded zero COVID-19 cases between 13 April and 5 August

Based on the data available on MOH's website, the state has received 21 cases since 5 August.

As of yesterday, Barat Daya has been declared a yellow zone.

Over the past 14 days, the state had five active cases in two different districts.
