It's a sad time for many as one of the oldest supermarkets in Petaling Jaya – Cold Storage in Section 14 – will be closing down by the end of 2019

The Edge Financial Daily quoted staff saying that the store's last day of operations in Jaya Shopping Centre will be on 31 December 2019.

As of last Saturday, it began its closing-down sale but items were almost cleared out by 5pm on that same day itself

Cold Storage is operated by GCH Retail (M) Sdn Bhd, which also runs the Giant supermarket and hypermarket chain, the Mercato supermarkets, and Jason's Food Hall.

The Edge calculated that around 13 Giant and Cold Storage outlets have shut down this year.

However, it also noted that the closure is part of GCH's business reorganisation to "better meet customer needs and to remain competitive". This includes its relaunch of 30 Giant outlets this year and the expansion of its ShopSmart convenience store chain with 500 outlets expected over the next 10 years.

The Cold Storage outlet has been an iconic supermarket for those living in the area, especially since its heyday when the shopping mall was known as Jaya Supermarket

In 2009, Jaya Supermarket was knocked down and replaced with Jaya Shopping Centre.

Since the announcement yesterday, many people have been reminiscing on times they used to visit the supermarket.
