The pre-dawn quiet in Seputeh was shattered today by the sound of 20 gunshots fired in a shootout between police and a gang of robbers that left a robber dead and an accomplice injured.

The robbers, two armed with handguns, had arrived in a BMW 523i before breaking into the double-storey terrace house at Persiaran Syed Putra 4 about 5am.

The key to the police success was the response of the victim’s son, in his twenties, who hid in his room during the incident and called the police. They were unaware that the manager’s son who was sleeping in a room had been awakened by the commotion.

“The son managed to call our operations room to inform us that they were being robbed and the suspects were still in the house,” he told reporters at the scene.

The injured suspect, who was shot in the chest, has been warded at the University Malaya Medical Centre. His identity is yet to be ascertained as he is believed to be carrying a stolen MyKad.

ACP Khairi added that checks by police showed that the injured suspect had seven previous criminal records involving drugs and theft while the suspect who managed to escape was believed to have carried cash robbed from the victims.

"We believe they obtained the car through the same means they were attempting before we intercepted them, which is breaking into and robbing households.
