An 8-year-old has suffered scald burns on her arms, ribs, and chest after her father poured hot water on her in their home in Air Itam, Penang

On 27 December, a neighbour overheard the commotion coming from the house and alerted a friend, who then checked on the family.

The girl was immediately taken to the Air Itam police station before being brought to Penang Hospital for treatment. She is reportedly in stable condition, Bernama reported.

The father, a prepaid card sales agent, had returned home from work at 1am to find that the dinner prepared by his wife had been finished by their children

"Hungry and furious, he stormed into the living room where his three older children were sleeping, woke them up before he scolded and beat them up," said Timur Laut Police District chief ACP Che Zaimani Che Awang.

He then proceeded to further punish the victim by pouring hot water from their water filter machine on her.

It was initially reported that the man's outburst was in response to the victim allegedly stealing RM10 from her mother. However, Che Zaimani confirmed that this was an older and unrelated incident, New Straits Times reported.

After the incident, the man and his wife reportedly fled with their youngest child for fear of being arrested

"Their eldest and third children are now staying with their grandmother who is living at the same flat. Police are in the midst of tracking down the couple who were using a white Proton Saga with a registration plate number PCK 9818," he said, according to Malay Mail.

The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.
