A 73-year-old monk from Penang became an overnight millionaire after winning the grand prize in a local savings draw
Chan Chai Siang struck it lucky in the 124th Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) Sijil Simpanan Premium (SSP) draw, walking away with RM1 million.
According to Harian Metro, Chan, originally from Butterworth and currently residing in Air Itam, started saving in the BSN SSP scheme in January last year.
Before dedicating his life to spiritual practice as a monk in 1985, Chan worked in several factories across Singapore and Penang
"This money I have saved is mostly from ang pows and donations received from the public," Chan said after receiving his mock cheque at the Penang BSN main branch on 23 June.
"I also used some of that money to help those in need," he added.
Chan said he currently has no plans for his newly acquired wealth and intends to leave it in the bank for his future wellbeing
The BSN SSP 2026 campaign, themed 'BSN SSP Jom Jadi Jutawan', offers a Millionaire Draw prize worth RM1 million to one winner every month from January to November.
The December grand prize offers RM1 million in BSN SSP savings and a Porsche Macan X for one winner.
