Residents across the Klang Valley reported feeling tremors this afternoon after a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck North Sumatra, Indonesia
According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia), the earthquake occurred at 12.18pm on Wednesday, 22 July.
The quake's epicentre was located 55km southwest of Langsa, Indonesia, at a depth of 10km.
In a Facebook post, METMalaysia said the tremors were felt along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
Following the earthquake, social media users reported feeling buildings shake in several parts of the Klang Valley, including Petaling Jaya, Kajang, Puchong, Klang, and Selayang, according to FMT.
Earthquakes in North Sumatra have triggered tremors in Malaysia on several occasions over the years
In March this year, a 6.5-magnitude earthquake off the west coast of North Sumatra caused tremors across northern Peninsular Malaysia and surrounding areas, although no tsunami warning was issued.
Earlier, in February 2022, occupants of several high-rise buildings in the Klang Valley and Melaka were evacuated after a 6.1-magnitude earthquake in North Sumatra caused noticeable tremors in Malaysia.
Meanwhile, METMalaysia is seeking feedback from those who felt the tremors today
The department has asked members of the public who experienced the tremors to complete an online questionnaire to help the agency collect information on the earthquake's impact.
