A lorry driver pleaded with a bystander to save his life before taking his final breath at the scene of a crash in Batang Merbau, Kelantan, at 4.15am today, 21 July

According to Berita Harian, Mohamad Shamsul Usop, who is also a lorry driver, said he was travelling along the East-West Highway to deliver goods from Penang to Kota Bharu to deliver goods when he witnessed the crash involving a lorry carrying chickens and a trailer.

"The lorry driver and the attendant in the front seat were still alive, while [a third victim] at the back was not moving. The lorry driver pleaded with me to get him out, but I couldn't help because he was trapped inside.

"I could only ask him to stay calm because help was on the way, while reminding him to recite his prayers," he said.

Mohamad Shamsul said he immediately contacted the fire and rescue department, which arrived at the scene within minutes.

Tanah Merah fire and rescue operations commander Mat Nuri Mohamad said that upon arrival, firefighters found that a five-tonne lorry transporting chicken supplies from Perak to Kelantan had crashed into a trailer parked by the roadside, reported Sinar Harian.

The victims were taken to Hospital Tanah Merah for post-mortem examinations.
