Police Arrest Penang Doctor Who Stole RM160,000 Worth Of TVs, Smartphones, And SmartTAGs

The doctor was arrested at his condominium last Thursday, 23 April.

A doctor who committed a series of break-ins at his Penang condominium since 2014 was arrested by the police last week

According to Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong, the 38-year-old suspect was detained at Gurney Park Condominium in Gurney Drive at 6pm on Thursday, 23 April.

New Straits Times reported the suspect is responsible for 22 burglaries in the building, which he has been staying in for the past six years.

Soffian said the serial robber's modus operandi was to enter unlocked homes in the morning to steal valuables from the living room and sell them at cheap prices

The police found stolen items worth about RM160,000 in the suspect's house, reported Malay Mail.

Among the items seized during the raid included eight Malaysian identity cards, two drivers' licences, one Malaysian passport, three Japanese passports, 26 laptops, 19 SmartTAGS, 67 smartphones of various brands, six televisions, 16 branded handbags, 13 branded backpacks, and three luggage bags.

The district police chief said the arrest has solved the break-in cases in the condominium, which reported losses amounting to RM493,615.

Soffian added the case will be investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking

The section carries a jail term of up to 14 years, a fine, and with whipping for repeat offenders.

The doctor is a first-time offender and he will be remanded until 1 May.
