Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) president Abdullah Zaik Abd Rahman (pic) pleaded not guilty to a charge of sedition over his remarks about how the Chinese came to Malaysia. The charge was read to him before Sessions judge Nor Hazani Hamzah.

Abdullah Zaik also pleaded not guilty to an alternative charge of publishing an article titled, “The coming of the Chinese with the British colonialists a form of intrusion” on the Isma website at

If convicted on the first charge, he could face a jail term of up to three years or a fine not exceeding RM5,000, or both. He could be jailed up to five years on the other charge.

DPP Manoj Kurup offered RM5,000 bail in one surety. However, counsel Haezreene Begum Abdul Hamid asked the amount be reduced as her client had to support nine school-going children. Judge Nor Hazani retained the bail amount as offered by the DPP in one surety and ordered that Abdullah Zaik’s passport be surrendered to the court.

Outside the court, Abdullah Zaik said Isma would keep fighting for the rights of the Muslims and Malays. Abdullah Zaik, who was accompanied by his wife Norsaleha Mohd Salleh, who is Isma women’s chief, as well as his supporters, said the action against him was an attempt to stop him from “telling the truth”. “The media has accused Isma of being affiliated to the Government or Umno. “But the sedition charge against me proves that we are not protected by anyone,” he said.

According to Isma president Abdullah Zaik Abd Rahman, the ethnic group were considered intruders into Malay land, and had been brought by British colonialists to oppress Malays.

“The Chinese entered this country together with the British invaders as intruders. Who gave them citizenship and wealth until their intrusion is protected until today?” “Those were all done by the British, who were conspiring with the Chinese to oppress and bully the Malays.”

Abdullah also said this was a mistake which had to be corrected but he did not say how. "Nobody has the right to mortgage the sovereignty of Islam and the Malays on this land."

Abdullah insisted that if the Chinese wish to stay as Malaysian citizens, they must be loyal to the Malay kings, accept that Islam as the religion of the federation, and accept the sovereign rights of the Malays. He claimed that a foreign race like the Chinese should not interfere and hinder the ambition of the Malays in the latter’s own country.

"If they want to remain as citizens of this country, they must pledge loyalty to the Agong and accept the position of Islam as the official religion and the sovereign rights of Malays.

"Standing in the way of Malay ambition and denying Malays their right in determining the future of the nation is a challenge and an act of overstepping by a foreign race," he said.

Malay rights group Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) has been reminded that the Chinese are Malaysian citizens too, and accorded equal protection in the federal constitution.

"Perhaps Isma is not familiar with Article 8 of the federal constitution which declares that 'there shall be no discrimination against citizens on the ground only of religion, race, descent', said MCA secretary-general Ong Ka Chuan.

“Our community have contributed towards the quality of education, gender empowerment, employment, trade, investment and business opportunities, cultural diversity and defence of the nation,” he said.

"We are Malaysian citizens, rakyat Malaysia. Our blue MyKad indicates our citizenship which should not be questioned by any quarters at all. "All our rights as Malaysian citizens irrespective of ethnicity are enshrined in the federal constitution," said Ong, who is also Tanjung Malim MP, in a statement today.

“It is racist and prejudiced as this derogatory insult hits below the belt because it falsely likens the Chinese community as having committed an offence,” said Ong.

According to MIC strategic director S Vell Paari, when somebody first mentioned the term "Isma" to him, he thought it was a sexually transmitted disease (STD). "I am not joking. That's exactly what I thought," Vell Paari told Malaysiakini. "But now I know that Isma is not a STD but something far worse. "It is a more debilitating illness, which if left unchecked, could ruin all that we have achieved until now," Vell Paari warned

He noted that it is disconcerting to see such elements threatening the harmony of this nation and called on the authorities to act against them. "What does he mean in urging the Malays to 'correct this historical mistake'? Is he asking for racial bloodletting? Is Isma a terror group and are the police going to ignore them?" he asked.

"The Chinese are wealthy because they are hardworking and have an enviable sense of business acumen. Unlike what Isma believes, wealth was not given to them on a silver platter. "The Chinese, Indians and other races have helped shape what Malaysia is at present be it in economic terms, infrastructure and even information technology."

In Response, Isma Told MIC's Vell Paari To Stay Out Of Matters That Do Not Involve Him

Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) today accused MIC strategic director Datuk Seri S. Vell Paari of insulting Muslims nationwide today after he jokingly compared the Islamist group to a sexually-transmitted disease (STD) yesterday.

“Don’t be foul-mouthed, it is better to stay quiet than making a senseless remark. And he doesn’t need to be involved in matters which do not involve him,” one of the group’s vice-presidents Abdul Rahman Mat Dali was quoted as saying on Isma’s website.

The group also warned Vell Paari against making any foul remarks against the group, and claimed that it was Vell Paari who is afflicted by STD. “More than that, I say he is like kurang akal and childish,” he added, using the Malay phrase which roughly means “half-witted”.
