Restaurants' Group Says 15% Service Charge During CNY Is 'Tip' For Workers
The extra charge does not include the 6% sales and service tax.
Be prepared to fork out an extra 5% in service charge when you go out to dine during Chinese New Year (CNY), as certain restaurants will raise service charge to 15% for the festive period, up from the usual 10%
The Malaysia Singapore Coffee Shop Proprietors' General Association said the increased charge at restaurants under its purview would serve as a "tip" for workers on duty during the first two days of CNY, reported FMT.
"Usually, most restaurants maintain the 10% service charge or do not operate on those two days," its president Wong Teu Hoon was quoted saying by the portal.
"[The restaurants in question] have issued notices informing customers of the increase, so the public can choose whether to eat at their premises or not," he said, adding that the association cannot interfere with members' decisions.
This comes after Oriental Kopi faced criticism on social media for announcing the higher service charge for the upcoming festive season
According to a notice by Oriental Kopi, the charge does not include the 6% sales and service tax.
