Life has a brutal way of forcing a hard reset. For Adnan Che Kar, a devastating 2021 house fire in Jalan Atas Paloh, Kelantan could have easily been the end of his story.
Instead, the 52-year-old decided to rebuild his livelihood from the ground up, pivoting to a popular Malaysian micro-hustle.
Alongside his wife, Zubaidah Ismail, 51, Adnan launched a roadside food stall in Jalan Mahmood in May 2023, selling packets of freshly made nasi lemak for just RM1 each.
"I went through a hard time after my house was razed. But I found that when we're tested, we learn to be more grateful for what we have and keep striving for an honest living," Adnan said.
The couple previously supplied local shops but chose to run an independent stall to secure full sales revenue
According to the New Straits Times, by selling directly to morning commuters, the couple keep their operation nimble while feeding the local community.
Every day except Saturday, they prepare 400 packets before dawn. Each classic portion contains anchovies, a quarter of a hard-boiled egg, sliced cucumber, and peanuts.
The response has been massive, with hungry crowds routinely clearing out the entire stock well before 11am
"For me, selling RM1 nasi lemak is not just for profit. I see it as a small act of charity.
"Even though the profit is small, I am grateful for the rezeki," Adnan added.
The couple also fulfil large-scale charity orders from individuals looking to distribute food to mosque congregants, tahfiz students, and the needy. These orders typically range between 350 and 400 packets per batch.
Adnan remains determined to maintain the RM1 price tag for as long as possible.
