Selangor has declared a special public holiday on 1 September after the state emerged as the overall champion of the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA)
According to the New Straits Times, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari made the announcement during the closing ceremony of the 22nd edition of the national sports event on Monday, 24 August.
He said the holiday was declared to recognise the contributions of athletes, officials, volunteers, and parents who played a role in Selangor's success
"Following the extraordinary performance at SUKMA 2026, and as a token of appreciation to every athlete and the 10,000 volunteers who contributed throughout the Games, I am pleased to announce that the Selangor state government is declaring a special public holiday on 1 September in conjunction with Selangor's success," he said.
Selangor Crown Prince Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim were also present at the closing ceremony.

Selangor topped the medal table with 245 medals — 101 gold, 73 silver, and 71 bronze
The Federal Territories finished second with 51 gold, 54 silver, and 52 bronze medals, while Terengganu came in third with 43 gold, 44 silver, and 36 bronze.
More than 12,000 athletes and officials from 15 state contingents and Brunei took part in this year's biennial Games.
