Selangor Issues Statewide Cholera Alert To All Its Hospitals & District Health Clinics
The alert comes after a single case involving a Malaysian citizen was detected in the Petaling district.
The Selangor health department has issued a statewide cholera alert to all hospitals and district health clinics, according to a circular
The 12 November circular, sighted by SAYS, is signed by Selangor health director Dr Sha'ari Ngadiman, who said that a case of cholera in the Petaling district was detected.
According to the circular, the case involves a Malaysian citizen.
"In this regard, it is hoped that all parties will take note and improve control and prevention measures more effectively in accordance with existing guidelines," it said.
No other details such as the age, gender, and condition of the patient were mentioned in the circular.
Early symptoms of the disease include painless watery stool and vomiting and can lead to dehydration, circulatory collapse, and even death if left untreated.
The circular asked medical practitioners to take preventive measures to curb the spread of the infection and to take the following actions:
- Taking stool samples for texture and sensitivity tests for suspected cases.
"Failure to report could result in prosecution under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988," read the circular issued to 11 health district offices and 12 directors of hospitals in Selangor.
Meanwhile, it also asked medical practitioners to advise the public
- Practise good self-hygiene including washing hands,
- Seek immediate treatment if symptoms associated with cholera occur, and
- Avoid consuming raw food or food which was not cooked properly.
