Commuting between Malaysia and Singapore via taxi will soon become more costly
Starting 1 January 2027, Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA) will replace the current monthly fee of SGD2 (RM6) with a per-trip fee of SGD15 (RM48), a more than sevenfold increase.
According to The Edge Malaysia, the transport authority said this adjustment to the Public Service Vehicle Permits (PSVPs) aims to narrow the cost gap between Malaysian and Singaporean taxi operators.
Only Malaysia-registered taxis licensed with valid Public Service Vehicle Licences (PSVLs) and Asean PSVPs issued by the LTA are allowed to operate cross-border services
"Commuters are advised to use only licensed taxis for cross-border travel, as only these have valid insurance coverage," the LTA said.
The authority cautioned that passengers using unlicensed vehicles could face issues, leaving them without adequate protection or avenues for compensation in the event of an accident.
"The LTA will continue to take enforcement action against illegal point-to-point transport services to safeguard the safety of commuters and livelihoods of licensed drivers," it added.
The authority said it would maintain strict enforcement to eliminate these illegal point-to-point operations entirely.
