Singapore Orders Recall Of Malaysian Yam Snowskin Mooncakes Due To Presence Of E. Coli

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has issued an immediate recall of Baker's Cottage's snow skin signature yam mooncakes following the detection of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria in the product

In a statement released last Friday, 13 September, SFA said the mooncakes were found to contain E. coli levels exceeding Singapore's maximum allowable limits during routine regulatory sampling.

"The mooncakes were imported from Malaysia by Ewayz Pte Ltd. As a precautionary measure, SFA has directed the importer to recall the implicated products. The recall is ongoing," the statement said.

E.coli is typically found in the intestines of humans and animals, and its presence in food often indicates cross-contamination during food production.

Although most strains of the bacteria are harmless, some can cause unpleasant symptoms like diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fever. Those who have purchased the snow skin yam mooncakes from the bakery are advised not to consume them and urged to contact their point of purchase for assistance.

Additionally, those concerned about potential health impacts after consuming the product are encouraged to seek medical advice.

The expiry dates of the snowskin yam mooncakes are 31 December 2024.

In response to the issue, Baker's Cottage is currently managing the recall and has taken immediate actions to rectify this issue

"While we ensured compliance with SFA standards before exporting to Singapore, it appears that mishandling during transit and storage at a third-party warehouse may have led to product deterioration," the bakery clarified in a statement.
