Single Mum Bids Tearful Goodbye As She Leaves Son At Children’s Shelter To Work In Singapore

A 26-year-old single mother made the difficult decision to send her 7-year-old son to a children's shelter before leaving for Singapore to work, hoping he will grow up in a stable and supportive environment

According to Guang Ming Daily, the mother, surnamed Kong (transliteration), dropped her son at Pusat Kebajikan Anak-Anak Yatim JAZ in Teluk Intan, Perak on Tuesday, 16 June, after struggling with the decision for some time.

Before leaving their home in Sekinchan, Selangor, the mother and son shared an emotional farewell.

The house was unusually quiet before they departed. Her son quietly walked to the table, poured a cup of plain water, and brought it to his mother.

"Mum, have some water," he said softly.

The gesture made Kong break down in tears, prompting her to hug her son tightly.

Before parting ways, Kong repeatedly reminded her son to study hard, be obedient, and take care of himself, each reminder delivered through tears as she held him close.

Kong gave birth to her son when she was 18. After separating from her first husband, she was granted custody of him, allowing him to take her surname.

Due to financial difficulties, her son had been cared for by his aunt since he was young. However, as circumstances changed, his aunt was unable to continue looking after him long-term.

Kong later remarried and had two more children, but her second marriage also faced difficulties, and the couple are currently going through a divorce.

With financial pressure mounting, she decided to work in Singapore to support the family, reported Sin Chew Daily.

Community leaders from Sekinchan and MCA representatives also attended the ceremony to show support for the mother and child.

The boy will be transferred to a primary school in Teluk Intan after completing the necessary procedures.

"We cannot change [the boy's] past, but we can nurture his future together," said a shelter representative.

After the story went viral, a Threads user said they wanted to help the mother and son by bringing her child to Singapore.

However, others cautioned that the process may be more complicated, as Kong would need to obtain a specific type of work visa to be eligible to bring family members into the country.

Regardless, the netizen said they would reach out to the mother to explore possible solutions.
