The Selangor state government has indicated that it may declare a special public holiday if the state finishes the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) as overall champions
According to the New Straits Times, Selangor Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneurship Committee chairperson Najwan Halimi said the proposal will be finalised after the 22nd national sports event concludes today, 24 August.
A closing ceremony is expected to be held later today at Aneka Walk in Section 14, Shah Alam, with Selangor Crown Prince Tengku Amir Shah Sutan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari set to attend.
Najwan said the public holiday proposal will be presented to Amirudin for consideration.
"We are on track to become overall champions. However, there are still about 90 gold medals up for grabs from today until tomorrow (23-24 August).
"So, we have to stay focused and fight for every remaining gold medal. The states behind us have around 40 gold medals, and if they manage to win 90, they could overtake Selangor.
"We cannot be overly confident. We are on track, but we want our athletes to remain focused," he said yesterday, 23 August.
In a Threads post last night, Amirudin denied a poster declaring Monday a public holiday was genuine. He added that if a public holiday is declared, the official announcement will only be made at the closing ceremony.
In a separate post, Amirudin conducted a poll asking whether Selangor should declare a public holiday if the state wins SUKMA. An overwhelming 93% of respondents voted in favour.

Cheah Zen Hong, a shooter from Pahang, is currently the athlete with the most medals, having won nine golds and one silver.
According to the live scoreboard, Selangor had won 238 medals as of 10.45am today, putting the state 87 medals ahead of second-placed Wilayah Persekutuan.
There are currently 12 more sporting events remaining.
