A home-cooked meal in Guangdong, China, led to an unexpected police visit on 14 July after a neighbour reported a smell resembling a decaying corpse
The woman, Chen, was actually preparing a traditional local soup made with Guangdong's famous "stinky vinegar."
Chen later shared the incident online, saying: "My neighbour thought I was cooking a dead body."
Known locally as "stinky fart vinegar", the ingredient is referred to as "liquid durian" and has a history spanning more than 2,000 years
It is made by stir-frying broken rice, fermenting it in spring water for three months, and storing it in earthenware jars.
Despite its pungent aroma, the broth is traditionally consumed to help relieve heatiness, fatigue, and other bodily discomforts.
The misunderstanding amused social media users, with one commenter writing: "This is the first time I have heard that cooking soup can be mistaken for a crime"
Another netizen recalled a similar experience, sharing: "I cooked stinky vinegar at home in Shenzhen once, and my neighbour warned that if I did it again, they would 'teach me a lesson.'"
Fortunately, the officer left without taking further action, confirming that the only thing fermenting was rice in a jar.
