Sunway University has been named the top private university in ASEAN

Securing the top spot out of 100 institutions in the AppliedHE Private University Ranking: ASEAN 2025, Sunway University stood out for its teaching quality, student satisfaction, and graduate employability.

The announcement was made during the AppliedHE Xchange: Recognising Excellence, Diversity and Impact event at Sunway University on Friday, 17 January.

"AppliedHE is always trying to measure what matters most to students and their parents. That means our ranking gives a different set of results, which makes it a valuable addition to the ranking landscape," said AppliedHE founder and CEO Mandy Mok.

"In a world with so many choices, it's important that we give students and parents different perspectives on higher education," she added.

The AppliedHE ranking system highlights institutions that provide the best overall learning experience and preparation for future employment, making it a highly sought-after recognition

The ranking is unique in its scope due to the fact that it only includes universities located in ASEAN countries that award locally accredited degrees. The system also rewards institutions that have a strong focus on quality of teaching and learning, and employability.

The quality of teaching and learning metric is responsible for 40% of the score, while the employability metric is responsible for 15-20%.

Other metrics include research, internationalisation, community engagement, institutional reputation, and brand value.

In addition to Sunway University securing the top spot, several other Malaysian universities made it into the top 10 rankings

Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU) ranked 4th, followed closely by Taylor's University in 5th place and City University in 6th.

Management and Science University (MSU) and Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur (IUKL) took 7th and 8th place, respectively.
