Seputeh MP Teresa Kok will be charged with sedition tomorrow over her controversial Chinese New Year video "Onederful Malaysia", in which she allegedly insulted Muslims and the nation’s leaders.

Kok’s aide Alice Lan said the Seputeh MP will be charged at the Duta High Court at 9.30am tomorrow.

Her lawyer, Sankara Nair, said he has been told to produce Kok at the Kuala Lumpur sessions court tomorrow. "I have been told by the police to produce her in court tomorrow morning to be charged under the Sedition Act," he told theSun today. Sankara said Kok is being charged under Section 4 (1)(c) of the Sedition Act which relates to "publishing, selling, or offering to sell seditious material".

"My opinion is that it (Onederful Malaysia) is a benign political satire that is not seditious, and does not contain any seditious tendencies; as a lawyer, I think it's cruel to charge her (Kok) with this," he said.

DAP national organising committee chief Anthony Loke slammed the prosecution of Kok as “ridiculous” and exposed the hypocrisy practiced by the Najib government. “I think this is ridiculous. It is just a political satire and you want to charge her for sedition? This shows clear double standards practiced by the government,” he told Malay Mail Online.

Meanwhile in Penang, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the charge is an abuse of power to eliminate Opposition politicians. "They (Barisan Nasional) cannot win the by-elections so they try to disqualify Opposition MPs using the Attorney-General," he told theSun, pointing out that BN only obtained 48% of the popular vote in the last general election.

March 2014: Home Ministry Admits Misinterpreting Teresa Kok's Controversial 'Onederful' Malaysia CNY Video

Home Ministry U-Turns Statement About Teresa Kok's Controversial 'Onederful' Malaysia CNY Video

The Home Ministry has finally admitted that Seputeh MP Teresa Kok's controversial Chinese New Year video clip "Onederful Malaysia" did not insult the prime minister.

This comes after the ministry released a "wrong" statement in Parliament last week, claiming that the satirical video was insulting and had poked fun at Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Kok said she received the official explanation from the deputy home minister yesterday, adding that the ministry's reply only referred to the statement and reports made by Malay NGOs.

Last week, the DAP vice-chairman had urged the ministry to retract its earlier statement, saying that its minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, had broken parliamentary rules by "clearly misinterpreting" the truth.

"Obviously, this is not what we are asking for but I am still glad that the deputy home minister has made the corrections and explained the confusion," she said at a press conference at the Parliament lobby today. "I have received the answer and because of that, I will not propose any motion to report the deputy minister to the parliamentary committee.

19 Feb: [PHOTOS] Dead Chicken And Red Paint Thrown At Teresa Kok's Office

Teresa Kok’s service centre was splashed with red paint and a dead chicken was placed at her doorstep, barely two weeks after a coalition of Islamic NGOs offered a reward to anyone who dared to slap her.

A dead chicken and a photo of Kok were also found by a member of her staff who arrived at the office about 9am today. When contacted, Kok referred to the photograph and said: “This is definitely targeted at me.”

Kok, who recently came under fire for allegedly insulting Islam and the Malay rulers in her Chinese New Year satirical video, was informed by the management of the building at about 9.20am. "They called me immediately after discovering what had been done," she said.

She said this was the second time a dead animal was thrown into the stairwell since Kok's controversial Chinese New Year video went viral earlier this month. “The first time... I think it was about the sixth day of Chinese New Year... a dead rat was found. We did not say anything at the time. “But now, this is a serious matter because it has messed up our premises,” Sim said when contacted.

A slaughtered chicken and four packets of red paint were splashed on the staircase leading to Teresa Kok's service centre.

Seputeh MP Teresa Kok has roused anger among the public with her 'kiasu' attitude and putting down the country's image by alleging that everything done by the government was wrong.

The latest to criticise Kok over the 11-minute clip was Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek, who said it showed the DAP MP's "kiasu attitude", adding that she was "unbecoming of a leader".

Shabery also labelled the video "annoying", "more nauseating" and "more disgusting".

"Teresa has bad taste, so is this a good example from a DAP leader? When we insult the country and point out other's weaknesses it will only encourage others to do the same," he told a news conference after a visit to Measat Satelite Systems Sdn Bhd in Cyberjaya, near here today.

Several quarters had also been up in arms over what they said was Kok's mocking of the prime minister, the Malay community and the country's leadership.

The MP for Semporna took offence to what he said was Kok's "tainting" of the Lahad Datu incident last year when security forces battled Sulu gunmen, losing 10 policemen and soldiers.
"I regret what is being spread by Teresa Kok. Malaysians, especially those in Sabah, have a deep connection to this incident.

"Let's not forget the sacrifices of the police and security forces from Sabah, Sarawak and the peninsula. Security in our country is a very important matter, so don't make a joke out of this," he said at the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Chinese New Year open house.

A non-governmental organisation (NGO) calling itself Gabungan NGO Pro BN has issued an ultimatum to Seputeh member of parliament Teresa Kok to prove the existence of pirates in Sabah within 14 days, or else face a law suit.

“It’s definitely her intention to embarrass Sabahans, to tarnish the state’s image. She clearly stated “you can visit Sabah and see pirates with bonus shows of kidnapping and shooting episodes”, the NGO’s president Zulkaranain Mahdar claimed today.

Zulkarnain further claimed that he received many queries from his friends about the clip which purportedly portrayed Sabah as still having pirates.

He was also of the opinion that the shooting scenes in the clip made fun of the security forces and may hurt the feelings of the widows of the personnel who died defending the nation in the Lahad Datu intrusion, February last year.

MCA Says Chinese New Year Is Not A Time To Belittle Our National Leaders Or Jeopardise The Nation's Image

MCA : VERY HURTFUL, Teresa Kok has tarnished the image of the country .

Image via

“Teresa Kok has tarnished the image of the country, national leaders and MCA. The descriptions used by the actors are very hurtful. Even worse, besides an absence of patriotism, practices which Kok and DAP deploy to score political mileage are unethical; more so, with the date of the Kajang by-election due to be announced anytime soon.

“The timing of the release of Kok’s video during Chinese New Year is the lowest form of disrespect to the Chinese community and culture. Welcoming the new Lunar New Year is an occasion for celebration, upholding family values, togetherness, imparting goodwill and auspiciousness, and not an occasion nor opportunity to belittle our national leaders or jeopardise the nation’s image”, slams Heng in a statement send to The Malaysian Times (TMT) today.

Kok, however, defended the video clip, saying it was merely a political satire.
"We wanted to usher in the New Year with humour and fun. The video was made for my audience among the Chinese community who speak Mandarin and Cantonese."

"As a citizen of Malaysia, I have every right to produce a political satire, which in my opinion and the opinion of DAP as benign political satire which is common place in our society." - Teresa Kok

"Apart from ceramahs, a political satire is just another medium in reaching society to express the feelings of the people. There is nothing seditious or defamatory in my CNY video clip, as commented by the Bar President and legal experts that I have consulted." - Teresa Kok

“My audiences are mainly Chinese and this is just for CNY. You see so many feng shui programmes coming up to CNY. It is based on that and it is just a joke, a political satire, I don’t see anything wrong with it,” Teresa chuckled.

The Seputeh MP Says The Video Was Targeted At Chinese Communities And The Mandarin Translations Have Been Twisted By Pro-UMNO Groups To Falsely Accuse Her Of Insulting The Malays.

"I regret that the actual message of the video clip has been twisted and spun by Utusan Malaysia, UMNO and the pro-UMNO NGOs, calling it anti-Malay and anti-Islam, and even accused me of humiliating the Malays (MalayuSial). If one scrutinizes the satire, no such derogatory messages or intentions have been made against any community." - Teresa Kok

The Seputeh MP Says The Video Is Not An Insult To Malays

Image via

Pro-Umno groups and Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal should stop making a fool of themselves by hurling false allegations about a Chinese New Year video clip, says Seputeh MP Teresa Kok. “Shafie and the pro-Umno groups clearly do not understand political satire and because of that they try to incite racial sentiment by using the video clip to cover up their failures in managing the country,” she said.

She denied that it insulted Malays, the security forces, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife.

“I hope they stop it as the false allegations can cause racial tension. They should research on Mandarin and Cantonese before making baseless accusations as they are only embarrassing themselves," Kok said in a statement.

She said whenever critics touched on the weaknesses of Umno leaders, they would be accused of “insulting” Malays as if it was the only party representing Malays in the country.

“To accuse me of insulting Malays is absurd,” said Kok.

Teresa Kok Will Not Apologise Nor Take Down The Video. She Says It Is Up To The Viewers To Interpret The Video.

A non-governmental organisation (NGO) calling itself Gabungan NGO Pro BN has issued an ultimatum to Seputeh member of parliament Teresa Kok to prove the existence of pirates in Sabah within 14 days, or else face a law suit.

Teresa was adamant that she will not take down the video and that it already been shared and viewed on the social media platform.

"It is up to you to interpret who the three characters are. We never mentioned names. All we mentioned were issues faced by the rakyat like inflation, security and education. So why should I apologise?"

In her statement today, Kok explained that the video clip touched on security issues in Sabah but denied poking fun at the armed forces during the Lahad Datu intrusion.

“The dialogue of the Feng Shui sifu in the clip only touched on the shooting and kidnapping but never on Lahad Datu. In fact, there was no dialogue that belittled or put down our armed forces," she said.

She denied insulting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, saying she did not mention him by name. "This is not true. I did not mention any names in the video. I never ran down or mentioned the prime minister's name or his wife or the Malay community. It is open to the viewers to interpret the video."

DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang today urged Datuk Seri Najib Razak to invite Seputeh MP Teresa Kok to screen her controversial "Onederful Malaysia CNY 2014" video at the Cabinet's weekly meeting tomorrow.

He said this was to stop ministers from making "a fool of themselves" when commenting on the contents of the video.

Saying many ministers have been "misinformed" of the actual meaning of the Mandarin-Cantonese clip, Lim said a proper translation should be provided to them.

"Clearly, among the first persons that need to be educated about political satires are Umno Cabinet ministers like Shafie and Ahmad Shabery," he said, adding that Kok should be congratulated instead of being criticised for her video, which at press time has attracted close to 200,000 views on YouTube since it was uploaded last week.
